Good Morning Harley World ~

Who ever invented a bacon scented ORANGE rubber ball for dogs must have envisioned Harley! Jon F. and his furries: Chloe and Milo, went shopping together for Harley Boo, and then drove all the way to Denton to expedite delivery of his toys, new ball, and marshmallows - Wow! As you can see, Harley hung out with his foster brother Moon and shared everything but his ball, lol. Thank y'all so much!

Can you believe we are starting week 7 of TSBR's Extreme Makeover Harley Edition.

For a dog we didn't expect to live 24 hours, the joy of watching him thrive and check off items on his bucket list has been unimaginable and a tremendous honor.

Last week Harley had a few rough spots with his appetite, but has since recovered it and despite that bump in the road has managed to gain half of a pound! Harley also got his nails trimmed, blood drawn (results still pending), ears cleaned and treated, and a thorough check over that gave him 2 thumbs up!

Keep those bucket list items coming as we work as a community to show everyone that 1 dog most certainly can make a difference, and the message is a loud and clear, "They matter...each and every one of them!"

We continue to look for ways that we can better his quality of life, and make the most of it, while attempting to manage and correct the damage from years of neglect and abuse. Our latest plan includes a consult with a Veterinary nephrologist (Renal specialist) as well as dental consult, to see if we can help Harley's appetite. New medications to help lower his BUN, increase appetite, and combat his anemia are in the works as well.

We will also be engaging a Veterinary acupuncturist to assist with joint pain and blood flow to the kidneys and extremities, and hope to engage a Reiki master to help bring positive energy into his battered body.

Those of our supporters who have had the opportunity to either interact with Harley or watch his adventures, know that he is worth every moment of our time, every penny we can all spare, and every prayer and hope our hearts can provide.

An outing with Harley always brings opportunities to engage the public...it starts with stares and whispers over his thin appearance, and ends with the joy of tears, laughs, a Harley hug and ball toss, but more importantly another educated community member! In between, lies the powerful message that we strive each day to share with Harley's World, and ours.

Harley is indeed a poster child for our educational mission!

We continue to be beyond grateful for your love and support in all forms. We hope to raise the funds necessary over the next two weeks to provide for these additional veterinary expenses that have the potential to offer Harley some very real benefits. We trust that what is meant to be for Harley will be provided.

http://www.retrieveafriend.org/Donate

Thank You from the bottom of his paws...and ours!

LOVE LOVE LOVE ~TSBR & HarleyAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14923772841552839165noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-256777261131915083.post-58927007335385870172014-07-12T22:04:00.001-05:002014-07-12T22:11:26.024-05:00Mail Call!

Can you believe what I got???
Got some good news and some bad news...oh ok let's have the good news first.

My favorite doc from Rickords Animal Hospital called my peeps this morning to chat about my labs...no not my foster brothers and sisters...the ones they stick me for each week to see how I'm doin.

Well guess what...yeah I guess in some ways it was a mixed bag, but the really good news is nothing real bad. In fact, my creatine is down almost 4points and so doc says I need to try real hard to eat my special meds this week so I can bring down my bun, and I thought buns were what my chicken sandwiches came on...silly me.

Anywho - so I have some work to do still, but they all agree, that what matters is not a number, but how I feel...

Well that brings me to the not so good news...you see I felt so good today that I got a little carried away, and well...(GULP),

I kinda had an accident with my new friend lampchop...but don't worry, I'm just fine...

But poor lammy - well, um, he had to see the mommers for emergency repairs...

I'm so sorry Maddie and Katie - I guess I got so excited I just shook, and shook, and shook lammy, and well...see for yourself!

Mommers said it was okay...that no one in Harley World would be mad either...(but boy oh boy did I have fun).

Okay gotta go - I'm off to second dinners, and hide and seek...

Can you believe we are starting Week 3 of TSBR's Extreme Make-Over: Harley Edition.

That's right today marks day 14 of Harley's freedom from his prior owners that starved and deprived him of care and comfort, leaving him on deaths door step.

Each day for Harley is a gift to him, and to us! It's also a constant reminder of our greater purpose in this life...to love and ensure that the animals we care for in our homes and communities never see the circumstances our Sweet Yellow Boy did. It takes each one of us to stop the abuse of animals in our society and each one of us to help heal the fragile spirits and frail bodies of those that make it out.
We hope you will join us on this journey.

Our awesome team Rickords Animal Hospital is getting creative to make sure Harley keeps up with his meals so he has the best chance at recovering that lost muscle mass in hopes to aid his kidneys in recovering.

As you can see from their meal time video, taken today...Harley thinks extra attention is way better than that boring metal bowl.

We hope to have blood work and his foster plan update soon, so stay tuned. For now Harley says...

Thank you from the bottom of his paws! (and ours)
Visiting with Harley and watching his videos and pictures it is beyond obvious that he is thriving emotionally and that car rides, wind in his face, toys, treats, good food, soft bedding, warm surroundings, loving fans, and a nation that cares for him is making a difference in this boys life, and we have made enormous progress in healing his spirit!

Yet he remains fragile and weak from a physical standpoint. So our mission continues as does Harley's need for your emotional and financial support. This is no short journey he is on, BUT every day now is a day of freedom from horrific conditions and one worth living and we all need to join in the virtual Harley group hug and recognize the difference we are truly making!
Thank you from the bottom of our paws!
Care is costly, even with great veterinary teams that support our cause...and long term care will be necessary even once Harley moves to foster - we continue to be optimistic that this will happen soon. If you are moved to give and join Harley's battle we invite you to consider a flat or recurring donation in any amount.

Happy Tuesday to our TSBR Troopies and Harley's fan club!

We know everyone has been patiently awaiting our Sweet Yellow Boy "Harley's" next update.

The weekend we wished for him brought more frustrating news for Harley and us!

However - he no doubt was happy to meet his new TSBR friend Jill who traveled to see him Saturday, and showed his enthusiasm at her visit by sitting and shaking on command, and then promptly plopping his head in her hands and resting.

He was also visited by Lori and Hope Monday who assist with our Animal Welfare team. Thank you to our dedicated volunteers who both drove nearly 10hrs round trip to make sure Harley had what he needed and give us a much needed update on his emotional state.

While his body is riddled with unimaginable destruction...a war zone so to speak - it is more and more apparent that beneath his years of suffering lies a genuinely sweet and gentle boy. The clinic staff adore him!

His spirit of course makes the journey along side him really difficult for us humans, that just can't reason with where he is, or how on earth anyone would allow him to get there...but he is there, and the reality of it is painful to watch and painful to contemplate what is exactly the "right" future for Harley.

We have said from the beginning that our purpose first an foremost was to ensure that he does not suffer one moment at our hands. In making that heart felt commitment, we deep down hope that Harley himself will tell us when he is ready to make that quiet journey that we all dread for him, and selfishly...for us!

While his blood values have not decreased, they also have not increased again.

This is not a deal breaker, but caution sign for us to observe.

Unfortunately, what can not be ignored are the test results from the one remaining tick panel that was still out...and it's not good news. Our Sweet Yellow Boy, on top of everything else, has a long standing case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. This is a severe illness caused by ticks. However, not the ticks that Harley brought with him on his journey with us. His blood values show that he has been sick for a long time, from what is likely a long term tick infestation and the damaging effects of them. Unlike an acute case, that while serious can be treated, Harley's frail body makes for an almost impossible prognosis. His poor kidneys deprive him of the ability to regain the severe muscle mass he has lost at the hands of his abusers, and what he needs most to combat these diseases is muscle!

After conferring with our team of veterinarians, TSBR has decided that it is time to move Harley north to DFW. Members of our Animal Welfare team and our Chair of Animal Welfare will make the trip tomorrow (Wed 6/18) to get our Sweet Yellow Boy.

Harley has been readied for his journey in the San Antonio end, and our team on the Dallas end is ready for his arrival.

Due to the time and logistics of what will be a long trip for Harley, his first stop will be an overnight at the Denton Animal Emergency Hospital where Dr. Polly and Dr. Pearson will ensure his comfort and continue his care.

The following day he will move to Rickord's Animal Hospital in North Ft.Worth where Dr. Rickords and Dr. Bellard will assume his ongoing care and we hope to address his anemia and kidney functions further.

The really good news is that Harley's kidney values that were almost off the chart have reduced to nearly half what the were, and this is an important improvement for him. He is also gained a whopping 5+ lbs...GO HARLEY!

Lastly, we will begin discussing a hospice home for Harley and talking with the prospects.

As you will surely know, this is no easy decision! While we remain guardedly optimistic, we ask for your prayers and support that the team caring for Harley and tasked with making the tough decisions, will have the wisdom and courage to know what is right in this situation.

As always we are grateful for your support in all forms.

One thing is certain...if Harley is to be given a chance to live out his days no matter how few they may be...he must have a compassionate and willing foster who will commit to his course of care, and put his needs, including when it is his time, first! If you truly believe that you can, and would like to provide this to Harley please private message us so that we can discuss options with you.

His current care bills are approaching 4k. Thank you to those who have donated to help Harley!

If you feel moved to support Harley - NO amount is too small. We invite you to use the link below to view donation options.

Vroom, Vroom...

We think Harley is trying hard to rev up his engine!

The past 24 hours have been filled with multiple meals - each 2 cans of KD strong and now he is also eating dry with the canned and eating it all. He is also drinking on his own. This is really great news!

There is quiet simply NOTHING like seeing a starved dog take the step to eat on his own. His intestinal tract is working well and it seems this is at least one area we can put a smiley face in the column on Harley's to-do list.

We have Harley on multiple antibiotics to proactively treat for Leptospirosis and Tick borne illness. Although just this morning the majority of his tick panel came back negative. Hard to believe when he was encased in a sort of tick armor...

His blood values improved again although very slightly- it is a step in the right direction and shows that his bone marrow is working to fight back.

The weekend will bring Harley some much needed rest from the poking and prodding but will not be without close care. He will also have some visitors from TSBR's DFW team to tell him firsthand how much we all are pulling for him and that he has a fan club the size of Texas cheering him on!

As soon as the balance of diagnostics are completed we will have a care plan to address the most serious issues like his kidney disease, heartworms, and enlarged prostate, and an estimate for that in place and will share that with our supporters.

In the meantime, we continue to provide on going stabilization and critical care and we think you all will agree that Harley has done more than we could have asked to rally.

Thank you from the bottom of our paws!

"Harley is so sweet. I don't think he's had much human interaction. He is patient and is warming up to being loved on. There is such sadness in his eyes, I did get a tail wag though. He has clearly been abused for a very long time. I just can't get over how sweet he is. I told him he was safe, no one would ever hurt him again and if he was strong enough we would fight for him. He winked at me. So I think he understood." Suzanne E.

Today Harley had a special visit from his local advocate. Their visit helps us pair the medical information with his emotional well being and ensure that we are on target with our mission for helping Harley and making sure we keep our committment to him...NO MORE SUFFERING! Today marked day 3 of project Harley and he started it off right by eating two whole cans of Canine KD and having a normal bowel response. He had his daily tick eradication session and while his blood values did not improve, it was the first day that they did not decline! We will take good news anywhere we can get it! Many people have written us and asked - "Why on earth would you save a 13yr old Lab and waste money and time?" Our Chair of Animal Welfare responded with the following and we wanted to share it with our supporters:

"We have fought for civil rights and equal rights. We have fought to end hunger, disease, poverty and even destruction of our environment. These battles at their core comprise our freedoms and our responsibilities...to ourselves and our communities. Saving Harley was at a minimum an act of kindness to him and more importantly a declaration to our communities that we will NOT stand for abuse... Not of one animal, no matter their age or breed...not one more minute.

If Harley can not survive his physical devastation at least he knew love, kindness, had good food, and a warm place to sleep for the first time in his life. I can go to sleep at night knowing we didn't let an abuser win...can you?"

We are grateful for the outpouring of support - emotionally, spiritually, physically, and financially to TSBR, Harley, and the compassionate doctors that are caring for him. We hope that each and every person that reads his story...now shared with over 25k people will tell the city of San Antonio that their citizens don't stand for abuse...not of one dog...not even an old one! We remain hopeful for...our sweet yellow boy - Harley! If you are moved to contribute to his care please use the link:

48 hours have passed since this sweet yellow boy lay helpless on a cold hard floor. His bones rubbing on the concrete and his heart devoid of hope.

Today he struggles for his life, but it's surrounded by warmth, soft bedding, good food, people that are gentle and kind, and a community that has more hope than we know what to do with!

His emotional needs are being met, yet his physical needs are difficult at best to combat. What we now know, and have confirmed medically, is that it is not cancer but instead years of systematic neglect has taken an unforgiving toll on this gentle boys once sturdy and handsome body.

Too anemic to produce his own new red blood cells, and kidneys that are barely functioning are sandwiched around a case of heartworm disease that is as infested in every part of his body as the ticks that fed on what barely remained of him. His prostate is enlarged and diseased and requires a neuter to rid his body of it...yet he is too weak and fragile to undergo such a procedure.

Yet despite his plight, he is as gentle and sweet as they come.

Harley's prognosis is brutally poor.

Our commitment to Harley is to heal his body and his spirit, but this includes knowing that our first responsibility to him is to ensure that he absolutely does NOT suffer at our hands.

Blood transfusions and critical care is costly and we know that our community of support will rally around Harley to ensure that no reasonable effort to save him will prevent others from being saved as well.

So today we hope and we wait! We hope for our medical efforts to not be in vein and we wait for his frail body to fight.

We ask for your continued prayers and thoughts.

We ask for your continued financial support.

We are grateful to be surrounded by so many that care for the weak, fragile, sweet, yellow boy that we know as "Harley."

Harley was seized by authorities because his owners were starving him to death.

He was laying...dying on a cold, hard shelter floor. Through the efforts of amazing volunteers, Texas Sporting Breed Rescue was able to take this boy from the shelter to a local veterinarian clinic to stabilize and assess his condition.

The team led by Dr. Kirby at Alamo Heights Veterinary Hospital is working diligently to balance his comfort and needs with running diagnostics.

Harley as you can see, is so emaciated it hurts to look at his sweet face...but he is a fighter.

What we have learned in the first 24-hours

He has severe kidney disease and we at this time do not know if it is age or related to another underlying issue.

We are waiting for a special tick panel to come back.

He is severely anemic.

To add insult to injury he is of course heartworm positive.

They are still fighting the heavy tick population that has taken over his fragile skin. Those buggers are not going without a fight

X-rays have been taken and are pending additional review by the radiologists.

Harley, and the doctors continue to need your prayers and well wishes most.

We do not have cost estimates at this time but will post his cost plan when we can more definitively assess his treatment needs beyond diagnostic care.

Join the fun - bid on the naming rights for your favorite puppy!

These puppies need names, so we are auctioning off the rights to name each puppy!
