It's Harley Time!

Can you believe we are starting Week 3 of TSBR's Extreme Make-Over: Harley Edition.

That's right today marks day 14 of Harley's freedom from his prior owners that starved and deprived him of care and comfort, leaving him on deaths door step.

Mail Call!!

Harley attended the staff meeting!

Good Morning TSBR Troopies and Harley fans...

Friday was a busy day for our Sweet Yellow Boy and we wanted to be able to give you
a full update. So here goes...

Harley wanted to start by giving a big SHOUT out to some extra special folks and
thank them for his sussies and mail:

  • Paws and nose bumps to Megan H. for the beautiful handmade quilt she made and sent to Harley all the way from Montana! Wow
  • Wet furry nudges to the Gilbert's, Tex, and Hunter who made it possible to give Harley his first toys to keep him busy while he heals. Harley particularly liked the squeaky blue bird.
  • BIG Harley shakes to his benefactors across our nation who have taken Harley's story to heart and are joining us on our mission to ensure he does NOT suffer one more day and his abusers don't win...your financial support is helping Harley have life and live it! What a blessing.
Not only did Harley enjoy his mail, but he loves his Veterinary team and handler Kari so much, he convinced them he would be a good boy if they'd let him come to their staff meeting...what a ham!

Harley - Week 2

Happy Tuesday to our TSBR Troopies and Harley's fan club!

We know everyone has been patiently awaiting our Sweet Yellow Boy "Harley's" next update.

The weekend we wished for him brought more frustrating news for Harley and us!

However - he no doubt was happy to meet his new TSBR friend Jill who traveled to see him Saturday, and showed his enthusiasm at her visit by sitting and shaking on command, and then promptly plopping his head in her hands and resting.

He was also visited by Lori and Hope Monday who assist with our Animal Welfare team. Thank you to our dedicated volunteers who both drove nearly 10hrs round trip to make sure Harley had what he needed and give us a much needed update on his emotional state.

Harley - Days 4 and 5

Vroom, Vroom...

We think Harley is trying hard to rev up his engine!

The past 24 hours have been filled with multiple meals - each 2 cans of KD strong and now he is also eating dry with the canned and eating it all. He is also drinking on his own. This is really great news!

There is quiet simply NOTHING like seeing a starved dog take the step to eat on his own. His intestinal tract is working well and it seems this is at least one area we can put a smiley face in the column on Harley's to-do list.

Harley - Day 3

"Harley is so sweet. I don't think he's had much human interaction. He is patient and is warming up to being loved on. There is such sadness in his eyes, I did get a tail wag though. He has clearly been abused for a very long time. I just can't get over how sweet he is. I told him he was safe, no one would ever hurt him again and if he was strong enough we would fight for him. He winked at me. So I think he understood." Suzanne E.

Harley - Day 2

48 hours have passed since this sweet yellow boy lay helpless on a cold hard floor. His bones rubbing on the concrete and his heart devoid of hope.

Today he struggles for his life, but it's surrounded by warmth, soft bedding, good food, people that are gentle and kind, and a community that has more hope than we know what to do with!

His emotional needs are being met, yet his physical needs are difficult at best to combat. What we now know, and have confirmed medically, is that it is not cancer but instead years of systematic neglect has taken an unforgiving toll on this gentle boys once sturdy and handsome body.

Too anemic to produce his own new red blood cells, and kidneys that are barely functioning are sandwiched around a case of heartworm disease that is as infested in every part of his body as the ticks that fed on what barely remained of him. His prostate is enlarged and diseased and requires a neuter to rid his body of it...yet he is too weak and fragile to undergo such a procedure.

Yet despite his plight, he is as gentle and sweet as they come.

Harley's prognosis is brutally poor.

Harley

Harley was seized by authorities because his owners were starving him to death.

He was laying...dying on a cold, hard shelter floor. Through the efforts of amazing volunteers, Texas Sporting Breed Rescue was able to take this boy from the shelter to a local veterinarian clinic to stabilize and assess his condition.
